Australia-Korea Broadband Summit 2003

The first Australia-Korea Broadband Summit was held in May 2003 on the Gold Coast, Australia. It was an initiative of Professor Mike Miller, Board Member of the Australia-Korea Foundation and head of the m.Net project, in conjunction with the then Australian Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston and his Korean counterpart, Dr Daeje Chin. The aim of the Summit was to share experiences in promoting the take-up of broadband technology with a focus on the business sector.

The Summit was established following recommendations from the Fourth Australia-Korea Forum in Hobart in July 2002, namely:

  • that a conference be held in Australia to bring a further understanding of Korea’s Broadband IT Policy to relevant members of the Information and Communications Technology sector, including higher education
  • that the Australian and Korean Governments consider framing an agreement on collaborative use of experimental ICT networks to trial broadband services in one or two industry sectors.

The aims of the 2003 Australia-Korea Broadband Summit were:

  • to inform Australian and Korean ICT industry leaders on lessons learnt so far from the rollout of broadband services in Korea and Australia
  • to enhance business awareness between the two countries and to promote collaboration between ICT companies in Australia and Korea.

The Summit Steering Committee consisted of representatives from the Australia-Korea Foundation, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the former Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts and of the Korea Information Society Development Institute. The Australia-Korea Foundation appointed m.Net Corporation as the conference organising agent. The m.Net Corporation was established under the Australian Government’s Advanced Networks Program, which concluded in June 2007.
