Korea-Australia-New Zealand (KANZ) Broadband Summit 2008

The 2008 KANZ Broadband Summit, held in Seoul, Korea on 19-20 June 2008, provided an opportunity for ICT and digital content firms and research interests from Korea, Australia and New Zealand to discuss recent ICT and broadband developments in each of the three countries and to explore potential collaborative partnerships and commercial ventures. The Summit also promoted the exchange of policy ideas between Governments.

Over 300 people from Korea, Australia and New Zealand attended the Summit, including the following Ministers who each gave a key note speech at the opening of the Summit:

  • Mr See Joong, Choi, Chairman, Korea Communications Commission, Korea
  • Mr Stephen Conroy, Minster for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Australia
  • Mr David Cunliffe, Minister for Communications and Information Technology. New Zealand

The objectives of the Summit were to:

  • Enable Australia, Korea and New Zealand to showcase the latest developments and research in the areas of broadband services, commercial content and applications, and broadband networks (fixed and mobile).
  • Provide a focal point for a range of commercial discussions on collaborative business and research opportunities for mutually profitable development in the respective areas.
  • Increase awareness of respective strengths in both industry and research in the three countries.
  • Deepen the understanding between Australian, Korean and New Zealand industry and government counterparts, in the Broadband and ICT sectors, of the lessons learned from broadband rollout in the three countries, with a focus on future needs and challenges for the development and delivery of applications, digital content and hardware for the future.

The Summit provided an opportunity for each of the three countries to engage in discussion on issues such as:

  • broadband technologies and services (4G, WiBro);
  • intelligent broadcasting (IPTV, DMB, digital TV, mobile broadcasting);
  • services and applications (digital and mobile content, e-Health and e-Learning, IPv6, emergency communication, and service infrastructure);
  • cyber safety and security (protecting children online); and
  • R&D and collaborative research networks.

Key outcomes of the 2008 Summit included:

  • Enhanced knowledge amongst the three countries of each other’s latest developments in commercial content and applications, broadband networks, digital content and research.
  • Productive commercial discussions and connections on immediate business and research opportunities for mutually profitable development in respective market places.
  • Participants shared ideas and explored the potential for future international collaborative projects, and the Summit provided a forum for the advancement of partnership between the three counties in the fields of broadband and digital technologies.
  • Increased awareness of each of the countries strengths in industry and research.
  • Participants drafted a statement about a suggested proposal of an “international digital content research and development program”.
  • New Zealand offered to host the next KANZ Summit in November 2009.

The Summit was hosted by the Korea Communications Commission.

DBCDE chaired the Steering Committee coordinating Australian participation in the Summit. Steering Committee members included Professor Mike Miller, Board Member of the Australia Korea Foundation, the Australian Embassy, Seoul, and representatives of other Commonwealth Departments, CSIRO, NICTA, and industry associations.
