Data produced with taxpayer funds should be in the public domain, in open formats, for the public good. There is too much legalese and IP protection going on. I prefer the US approach where works by the US government can not be copyrighted. If there was all encompassing whole of government legislation that removed copyright from all future government works there would be a public benefit and legal and administrative cost savings to the government.
